In parallelogram ABCD, AB = x + 8, BC = 3x, and CD = 4x – 4. ABCD must be a

I'm confused by this question. Please help me if you can. This are the answer choices.

(A) rectangle (B) rhombus (C) trapezoid (D) square (E) pentagon

We can lure out (E) as it is a parallelogram.

As AB=BC (x+8=3x) x=4; also if AB=CD (x+8=4x-4) x=4; and if BC=CD (3x=4x-4) x=4:

In conclusion, AB=BC=CD, so I'm left with the choices (B), (C) or (D), but I have to pick 1.

But why can't a trapezoid have 3 congruent sides? I drew one just to make sure it is possible. Besides, a rhombus also has 4 equal sides, so I'm still confused.

My apologies, a trapezoid can have 3 equal sides, but by definition, a trapezoid only has 1 pair of parallel sides. And to be a parallelogram you need 2 pairs of parallel sides. Just as a square is a specific type of rectangle, a square is also a specific type of rhombus. In fact, one definition of a square is: a quadrilateral that is both a rectangle and a rhombus. Sorry for the confusion! I hope this helps!

But can't it be a rhombus too, as its 4 sides are also equal?

i understand what you are saying, however if they wanted us to go towards a rhombus, I think there would have been information on the diagonals.
