2C2H6 + 7O2 ==> 4CO2 + 6H2O ... balanced equation
The mole ratio of O2 to C2H6 is 7 : 2. For gases @ constant temperature and pressure, this is also the volume ratio. So, it takes 7 liters of O2 to react with 2 liters of C2H6. Using this concept, we simply set up a proportion or use dimensional analysis to solve for the volume of O2 needed to react with 19.0 L of ethane.
Dimensional analysis:
19.0 L C2H6 x 7 L O2 / 2 L C2H6 = 66.5 L O2 required
Proportion:
2 L C2H6 / 7 L O2 = 19.0 L C2H6 / x L O2 and x = 66.5 L O2 required
