If the point that the circle passes through is (0, 212), and the center of the circle is at the origin, then we will write the equation in the form x2 + y2 = r2 where r is the radius. Since the center is on the y-axis and the given point is also on the y-axis, then the distance between these 2 points represents the radius and is 212.
So the equation is x2 + y2 = 2122 or x2 + y2 = 44,944.
** The way the y-coordinate was written in the original problem ( i.e. 21 2 ) makes me wonder if the y-coordinate is, in fact, 212 as this seems to be a rather large value to be used in this type of problem. If the y-coordinate is correct at 212, then the equation is correctly written.
