In my video I modeled visually how to convert a mixed number to an improper fraction. The procedure for doing it with any mixed number is simply to multiply the whole number (in this case 1) by the denominator (4) and add that product to the numerator. This is done because you are breaking the whole number into smaller fractionally pieces that are the same size as the fraction so you can add them together. Once you've multiplied the whole number by the denominator in the fraction (4*1=4) you add the product to the numerator which represents additional pieces of a whole to get the total number of pieces of a whole that you have: (4/4) + (3/4)= 7/4.
