Line l1 has the equation -x+y=1and line l2 has the equation y=x+4. Find the distance between l1 and l2.

The line 1 equation should be changed to y=x+1 because you want to isolate the variables by getting it alone. To isolate y in the [-x+y=1] equation, you have to add x to the other side.

Should look like this:

-x +y = 1

+x +y = 1 + x

y = 1 + x or

y = x + 1

Line 1: y = x + 1 line shifted 1 unit up

Line 2: y = x + 4 line shifted 4 units up

To find the distance between the two lines: 4-1 is 3 units.
