two numbers that have a product of -35 and a sum of 2
Let A = 1st number and B=2nd number
so....
A*B = -35
A+B = 2
...this is a common 2 equations and 2 unknowns problem type for algebra....
...using substitution method.....we have...
A*B = -35
A+B= 2
substitute one of the values of equation 2 into equation 1...like so...
A * (2-A) = -35
...solve for A.....
2A - A2 = -35.....rearrange......A2-2A-35 = 0.....(A-7)(A+5) = 0 .......A-7 = 0....A+5=0... A = 7 either/or -5
...if A=7, then B = 5......if A = -5, then B = 7....
A = -5 solves both equations CORRECTLY....SO B = 7....-5 and 7 correctly answer the question...
