Okay, so we have the equation 5x2 +bx+12 = 0. One of the solutions to this equation is x = -4/5.
If we know the value of x, then we can easily solve for b.
First, try substituting x in this equation for -4/5. Every time you see an x, replace it with (-4/5).
(-4/5)2 + b(-4/5) + 12 = 0. We don't need a calculator to do this.
Now, we know that a number (n) squared means you multiply it by itself once. n2 = n x n = (n)(n).
So, (-4/5)2 = (-4/5)(-4/5). If we multiply a negative by a negative we get a positive, so we can also write this as (4/5)(4/5).
To start solving for b, we want to get be to one side and all the numbers to the opposite side so we can get b = ____.
First, we should start with any addition or subtraction we see. Let's look at the +12. We want to bring that from the left side to the right side of the equation. We do that by doing the opposite operation to both sides.
The opposite of addition is subtraction.
(4/5)(4/5) + b(-4/5) +12 = 0
-12 -12
__________________________
(4/5)(4/5) + b(-4/5) = -12 Now, we can also subtract (4/5)(4/5) from both sides.
-(4/5)(4/5) -(4/5)(4/5)
__________________________
b(-4/5)= -12 -(4/5)(4/5) What can we do to get b by itself? We do the opposite operation. Since b
is multiplied by (-4/5) now we need to divide it by (-4/5) to get rid of (-4/5) on the left and move it to the right. Another way to divide fractions is to multiply by the reciprocal (multiply by the fraction flipped upside down. For example, if you 4 divided by 1/2 it is the same as 4 multiplied by 2/1. The reciprocal of (-4/5) is (-5/4), so we need to multiply both sides of the equation by (-5/4).
b(-4/5)x(-5/4) =(-5/4) x (-12 -(4/5)(4/5))
b = (-5/4) x (-12 -(4/5)(4/5)) Now we solve for b, multiply (-5/4) by 12 and (-5/4) by -(4/5)(4/5).
b = (-5/4) x -12 - (-5/4) (4/5) (4/5). First, -5/4 x 4/5 =-20/20 =-1.
b = (-5/4)(-12)-(-1(4/5). Next, -1 x 4/5 = -4/5. If we have - -4/5, this means we add 4/5. Subtracting a negative means we add.
b = (-5/4)(-12) + 4/5 Then, we need to multiply (-5/4) by -12. We can just multiply right across the top and do -5 times -12 then divide the answer by 4. (-5)(-12) = 60. 60/4 = 15.
b = 15 + 4/5
If we want to turn this into a decimal, we know 1/5 = .2. So, 4(1/5) = 4(.2) = .8.
b= 15+ .8
b= 15.8
