O2 + 4Na ==> 2Na2O
Both oxygen and sodium on the left side of the reaction have oxidation numbers of zero (elements)
On the right side, oxygen has an oxidation number of 2- so it has been reduced.
On the right side, sodium has an oxidation number of 1+ so it has been oxidized.
Reduction half reaction:
O2 + 4e- ===> 2O2-
Oxidation half reaction:
4Na ==> 4Na+ + 4e-
