Building a pathway

The face of a brick is 3.5 inches by 8 inches. Suppose you want to create a pathway thats 56 inches wide by 20 inches long. How many bricks would I need?

the width w=3.5 and the length l = 8

56 / 3.5 = 560/35 = 112/7 = 16 bricks in width

20 / 8 = 10/4 = 5/2 = 2 1/2 bricks in length

16* 2 1/2 = 16 * 5/2 = 40 bricks

Another way to think of it that you need an area of 56 * 20 = 1120 square inches and each brick

is 8 x 3.5 = 28 square inches

1120/28 = 560/14 = 40 bricks
