We have a homework assignment that I am stumped on.

We are trying to see which gender owns more shoes, pretty much (if either of them.)

The average for men (according to our data) is 9.667

The average for women is 20.296

we need to find the relevant statistic.

The problem states that our parents think the average pair of shoes between men and women is the same / equal, but we disagree, thinking one gender owns more shoes... but don't know which gender owns more.

I also need the P value....

And since you don't know which gender owns more, you want to figure out whether there is any difference (regardless of the direction). In this situation, you should use a two-tailed t-test.
