That friend that’s really good at Math
Hi, So we’re going start with what we know:
- We know that there’s 597 tickets.
- We know that adult(x) tickets and student(y) tickets add up to 597 ticket.
- We know that there are 53 fewer student tickets then adult tickets.
So now we use that information to make an equation. Two actually, where x represents adult and y represents student:
x + y = 597
y = x - 53
Now we’re going to plug in the second equation in the first one
x + (x - 53) = 597
Now solve
x + x - 53 = 597 Add x. They are like terms
2x - 53 = 597 Add 53 on both sides.
+ 53 + 53
2x = 650 Divide 2 on both sides.
/2 /2
x = 325
So 325 adult tickets were sold for the school play.
