Let W = width of the rectangle
W + 3 = Length of the rectangle
40 = area of the rectangle
QUESTION: WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE RECTANGLE?
(LENGTH) (WIDTH) = AREA
(W + 3) (W) = 40
W^2 + 3W = 40
W^2 + 3W - 40 = 0
(W + 8) (W - 5) = 0
W + 8 = 0
W = -8 which is impossible here. Length is POSITIVE.
OR
W - 5 = 0
W = 5
SINCE THE WIDTH IS 5, THEN THE LENGTH = W + 3 = 5 + 3 = 8
ANSWER: THE LENGTH IS 8 UNITS.
CHECKING:
DOES THE LENGTH TIMES THE WIDTH EQUAL 40 SQUARE UNITS?
8 x 5 = 40 SQUARE UNITS.
Hope this was helpful Madissen.
