What is b?

For this I got; (B) 145. Is my answer correct?

X² – y² = 143

Adding straight down:

2 X² = 432

 2        2

So X² = 216

Take the square root of 216

36 x 6  

So, 6 square root of 6

ð No solution is correct, but the answer is really 6 square root of 6

Jesset, apparently the problem statement is distorted in different browsers.

on my iPhone, it appears to be

x² + y² = 289

2x² - y² = 143

so add the two and get

3x² = 432

x² = 144

x = +-12

substituting in first equation

144 + y² = 289

y² = 145

So b = 145, as you found.

Well its hard to determine what the real question is.

I interpreted it as being x² + y² = 2892 and x² + y² =143

These yield (±39, 37) as they intersect above the x-axis, and 37 is one of the answers.....
