Detroit Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya was recorded throwing a pitch at a velocity of 107 miles per hour. If he threw the pitch at an angle of 32° below the horizontal, find the vertical and horizontal components of the velocity.(You can round the answers to one decimal place.)

Since sin = opp/hyp then sin(32°) = y/107 then multiplying both sides by 107 gives us 107sin(32°) = y. That is the y or vertical component of the velocity. You can plug that into your calculator and it gives you approx 56.7 miles per hour

Since cos = adj/hyp then cos(32°) = x/107 then multiplying both sides by 107 gives us 107cos(32°) = x. That is the x or horizontal component of the velocity. You can plug that into your calculator and it gives you approx 90.74 miles per hour
