Geography, scarcity, and the adventurous nature of the Greek people allowed them to become successful traders since ancient times. Greek terrain is mountainous and agricultural land scarce. But it provided easy access to natural sea ports as well as many islands in the Aegean Sea with fresh water and refuge against bad weather. On top of that, there is a lack of some useful raw materials, such as metals. These conditions, coupled with the innate desire of the Greeks to explore and discover, drove them to the sea, and thus trade and colonization.
