1/5 of the chocolate chips were split across 3 batches of cookies. To figure out how many chocolate chips went to each batch, we can simply divide 1/5 by 3. Therefore, each batch required 1/15 of the chocolate chips. If you wish to check your work, you can add 1/15 three times which will give you 3/15. As you know, 3/15 simplifies to 1/5!
To help you understand this better, I assume the bag of chocolate chips contains 100 chocolate chips. To make the 3 batches of cookies, we used 1/5 of these 100 chocolate chips. In other words, we used 20 chocolate chips to make 3 batches of cookies. So, how many chocolate chips did each batch require? 20/3, roughly 6.667 chocolate chips. 6.667/100 chocolate chips comes out to roughly 1/15.
