To solve this problem, I would start by thinking about what is easy to figure out. If you have 6 gallons and you use half of them, then that is just 6 divided by 2, which is 3 gallons that I used for cereal. So, I know that I have 3 gallons left. Then, I have to figure out what 2/3 of of 3 gallons is to figure out how much I used to make cookies. You can draw a picture to represent the 3 gallons, like this:
1 gallon 1 gallon 1 gallon
There are your 3 gallons. The fraction 2/3 just means that you circle 2 out of every 3 things that you have. So, if I circle 2 of the 3 gallons that I have, then I will see that I used 2 gallons, so I must only have 1 gallon left.
