The angle of elevation of the sun is 68 degrees when a tree casts a shadow 14.3 m long. How y’all is the tree?

Brandon L.

Make a right triangle facing left. The bottom of the triangle will be 14.3, the hypotenuse is unknown, and the remaining side (which is the tree) is also unknown, so label it x. Ultimately, you want to find x. Next, you know your angles because they tell you the angle which is opposite the length of the tree (the one on the ground but not the right angle). That is 68degrees. Okay stop here. Now think back to SOHCAHTOA And look what they are asking you to do. They want you to find X and the only other side you know is 14.3. 14.3 just so happens to be the side that is ADJACENT to your 68degree. OPPOSITE from the angle is your tree length (x). So let’s use TOA (tangent=opposite / adjacent). That means Tan68= X / 14.3 now, just solve for x by multiplying both sides by 14.3! X= 14.3tan68 !
