Math and science made easy - learn from a retired engineer
When you drive a car there is a certain kinetic energy with cruising along at a certain speed (the value of that energy is calculated from the equation KE = 1/2mv2). When you put on the brakes as you approach a stop sign, that energy is dissipated in the brakes as heat. When you come to a stop, the car now has no kinetic energy and ALL the energy you had previously has been lost as heat.
