Joe spends 2/5 of his money on a jacket and 3/8 on a shirt and he spends the rest on a pant. What fraction of his money did he use to buy the pants

2/5 + 3/8

=16/40 + 15/40

=(16+15)/40 = 31/40

That's the fraction spent on a jacket & shirt

1-31/40 = 40/40 - 31/40 = (40-31)/40 = 9/40 = fraction spent on pants

Or you could do this in decimals: 2/5 = .4 3/8 = .375 add them together to get .775

subtract that from 1. 1-.775 = .225 = 225/1000 = 45/200 = 9/40
