Complimentary angles add up to 90° Supplementary angles add up to 180°. A nice way to remember that is: C comes before S in the alphabet and 90 comes before 180 so C goes with 90 and S goes with 180.
Now for this problem:
two angles (x and y) are supplementary.
That means they add up to 180. So we get one equation:
x + y = 180
Then:
one of the angles (x) is (=) 2 less than ( - 2) three times the other (3y)
x = 3y - 2
Substitute that equation in for x in the first equation:
(x) + y = 180
(3y - 2) + y = 180
Combine like terms:
4y - 2 = 180
Solve for y:
4y = 182
y = 45.5
Plug that back in for y in the equation x + y = 180:
x + 45.5 = 180
x = 134.5
So one angle measures 45.5° and the other measures 134.5°
Let’s check this.
45.5 + 134.5 does equal 180, so they are supplementary.
45.5 * 3 - 2 = 134.5
