Energy put into the system will be the energy required to break the 2 H-H (H2) bonds + the energy required to
break the O=O bond (O2). The energy released by the system will be the energy liberated when the 2 molecules of H2O are formed. This will be 2 x the energy liberated by each O-H bond in water. If you look up the values for all of these transitions, you will find the energy released by the system is greater than that put into the system, so the sign will be negative (an exothermic reaction).
