If I buy a pepperoni pizza, I pay $12. If I add mushrooms, I pay 12 + 0.50(1), though with equations we turn that around to 0.50(1) + 12. Adding onions, too, I pay 0.50(2) + 12.

Since I am writing an equation for an unknown number of toppings, that looks like 0.50x + 12. Again, we would normally say ""= 16.50" for Don's pizza, but we're goody and put that first.
