Molly had $80. She gave 3/4 of it to her mother and 1/2 of the remaining to her brother. How much money did she have left?

You will have to break this into steps.  Start with giving 3/4 of the $80 to Molly's mother:

 

($80)(3/4)=$60 goes to Molly's mother.

 

The remaining money is $80-$60=$20

 

Half of what remains ($20), goes to her brother:

 

($20)(1/2)=$10 goes to her brother.

 

Since she gave $60 to her mom and $10 to her brother:

 

$80-$60-$10=$10 remaining for Molly.

This means $20 is what she has remaining after she gave $60 to her mother.

1/2 of the remaining ($20) to her brother. That means she gave him $10 (1/2 of 20). Now she has 20-10=$10
