If AD=27, AC=2x, BC=3, and BD=x, what is x?

It may help to draw a diagram of the segments in alphabetical order. ABCD. The total of the line AD is 27. The bit we are looking for is X. 2x+x is fine if the two ends of the line segment were on top of each other but they are not. There is a 3 on the segment BC which we will need to subtract. Thus the X can be found by 2x+x-3=27 or 3x-3=27 or 3x=30 and thus x=10.
