Question

Given unlabelled samples ethanol,ethanoic acid and ethyl ethanoate but weren’t allowed smell how you might identify which one was which?

1. Difference is boiling points
2. Difference in densities

Easiest way is to weigh 1.0 ml of each.

1.0 ml ethanol should weigh 0.79 g

1.0 ml ethyl ethanoate should weigh 0.90 g

1.0 ml ethanoic acid should weigh 1.0 g
