In my opinion I believe that the best route to becoming a business owner is to learn accounting and business management. I am the co-owner of A & N Business solutions, which is a business that helps other businesses succeed. The main challenge to small business success in terms of profitability and even viability is in their accounting. Many have a hard time understanding that revenue does not equal profit, and an even harder time understanding how all the pieces impact profitability. Next I see issues with employee motivation and turnover, being in charge of a successful business requires leadership, not power, there is a difference.
As far as steps go, I would advise you find an internship. Specifically one that will allow you to see and work in multiple departments if you can from accounts payable to executive management. Also, NETWORK. Many business owners are eager to share their experiences, success and failures with you if you are eager to learn.
Finally, find what business you want to make and figure out how to make it better. Differentiate yourself from the competition. Some will buy your product or service, but most will buy that difference.
