Hi Teri P.,
I assume this line segment drawing accompanied your problem.
H......................J...................................K
Then we have:
H.......................J..................................K
|<----2x+1/3---->|<-------5x+2/3------>|
|<-------------------12x-4------------------->|
Therefore:
HJ + JK = KH
(2x + 1/3) + (5x + 2/3) = 12x - 4
2x + 5x + 1/3 + 2/3 = 12x - 4 ......(rearrange the like terms)
7x + 1 = 12x - 4 ...........................(add 2x + 5x = 7x and add 1/3 + 2/3 = 1)
-7x .........-7x ................................(subtract 7x from both sides)
.
1 = 5x - 4 .....................................(result)
+4.....+4 .......................................(add 4 to both sides)
5 = 5x ..........................................(result)
÷5...÷5 .........................................(divide both sides by 5)
1 = x ............................................(answer)
Have fun! I hope this helps, Joe.
