In order to find the slope we first need to get the equation into the y=mx+b format
The given equation is almost there: 2y=3x-4 we just need to get the "y" variable by itself without the 2.
In order to do that we need to divide the entire equation by 2.
Why? 2y means 2 multiplied by y, in order to get a variable by itself we must do the opposite of what is given. The opposite of multiplication is division, so we need to divide by 2.
BUT by the rules of algebra, what we do to one side of an equation we MUST do to the other side.
Dividing across the ENTIRE equation by 2 gives us: y=(3/2)x-2
Now that we have it in y=mx+b form (m being 3/2 and b being -2) .... that formula tells us that "m" is the slope. So, our slope is 3/2. Knowing that parallel lines have the same slope, a parallel line will also have the slope of 3/2.
