If x = the speed of Spencer, and y = the speed of Chase, then:
x = y + 7 (because Spencer is travelling 7 mph faster than Chase)
Also, both Chase and Spencer travel for 8 hours and cover 184 miles of distance in total. Since distance = velocity*time, then:
184 miles = 8x + 8y
184 = 8*(x+y)
23 = x + y
And since x = y+7 (as shown above), then:
23 = (y+7)+y
23 = 2y + 7
y = 8 mph = speed of Chase
Since Spencer travelled 7 mph faster than Chase, then x = 15 mph = speed of Spencer.
