Another way to answer the question is to remove the half first by multiplying both sides by 2:
1/2(y + 12) * 2 = 7 * 2
y + 12 = 14
Subtract 12:
y + 12 - 12 = 14 - 12
y = 2

First convert the sentence into an equation:
1/2 (y+12) = 7
distribute the 1/2
1/2 y + 6 = 7
combine like terms (subtract 6 from both sides)
1/2 y = 1
isolate y by dividing both sides by 1/2
y = 2
