To solve for x and y, simply use one of the standard methods: combination or substitution.
I would use combination--multiply one by a common factor such that the x or y values are the same, then add or subtract to eliminate one variable.
Parallel vs. Perpendicular:
For this, put each equation into the "slope intercept" form: y = mx +b
If they are parallel, then the slope (m) will be the same. If perpendicular, the m value of one will be the negative of the inverse of the other. eg if one has m = 2, the perpendicular line will have m = -1/2
