So when you have two things coming together to form a new compound it's called a synthesis reaction. Notice how the compound NaCl is synthesized when the reactants Na and Cl come together.
To take this a little more in depth if you're interested, we can see that the NaCl formed in this particular reaction is an ionic compound. We know this because it is a bond between a metal (Na) and a nonmetal (Cl). It's also important to know that an ionic compound is formed by the transfer of electrons.
