I think that Cynthia B gets the gold star, according to a strict reading of the PEMDAS rules. In the real world, such as in a computer program, I would add another pair of parens to make it clear to human readers what my intent was.

PEMDAS first, then left to right.

People get “1” as the answer if they distribute the 5.

So if Pemdas is first that means .... 20 ÷ 5(1+3) ...Parentheses, exponents , multiply , divide , addition , subtraction.... 20 ÷5(4) so now it's multiplication turn ... which makes it 20 ÷20 ... now you do left to right .. and it equals 1

multiplication and division are equal to each other so when they're next to each other you work it left to right same with addition and subtraction

I'm sorry but 20 ÷ 5(1+3)=1 becasue you start with 1+3 which is 4 then multiply 4 and 5 which is 20 then divide which is one

While yes they are equal side by side the parentheses indicates its to be done before the division so we would add first 1+3=4×5=20÷20=1

Except that the parentheses after you add is no longer parentheses but means multiplication which is how we arrive at 16 instead of 1

The answer to this question is still 1 though. Regardless of how you write it out when solving this question is asking 20 divided by the solution to 5(1+3), not 20 divided by 5 times (1+3). If you wanted to be particular about it it should be written 20/(5(1+3))
