Math homework help
Let's say that the length of the rectangle = L; and the width of the rectangle = W
The first sentence says, "the length of a rectangle is 3 cm greater than its width"
Translated, we can say L = W + 3.....(1)
Now, when it says, "...the perimeter is 24"
Well, the perimeter of a rectangle is
P = 2L + 2W so,
24 = 2L + 2W
Notice that the equation above can be divided by 2 to give us
12 = L + W.......(2)
Now using (1) we can substitute W + 3 in place of L, giving us
12 = (W + 3) + W
12 = 2W + 3
9 = 2W
W = 9/2 = 4.5 cm
Thus, L = W + 3
L = 4.5 + 3 = 7.5 cm
So the dimensions of the rectangle is 4.5 cm x 7.5 cm.
Hope this helps
