Forecasting is making an educated guess about the future.
Farmers are very interested in forecasting.
They want to know how much rain there will probably be. That lets them figure out what corps will do well with the probable rain fall or will irrigation be necessary.
They want to know what markets will be for the different kinds of corps they might plant. They need a market that will buy their corps at a good price.
They need to estimate whether they will do better to buy a new machine or keep the old one running.
Geologists, based on history and geology, can forecast a probability for future earthquakes. This helps city planners to decide on building codes for new buildings.
We all like to know when hurricanes, tornados or good weather is likely.
Based on best guess estimates of sea level rise, Miami has changed building codes to only allow the first floor of new construction to be used for parking.
