Why are people so afraid of public speaking and is there a biological basis for not wanting to be the focus of attention since a person who stands out can more easily be targeted?

"Afraid" is often the reaction (step two) to perceived negative response to a previous attempt. So, before "Learning" public speaking techniques, get a group that will praise and not reject you.
