When giving a speech or other type of presentation, silence can be helpful as a way of pausing to let information, or even a joke, be absorbed by the audience. If you rush through a speech without giving the audience time to digest what you are saying, a great deal of what was said could easily be lost.
Silence can also help as a management tool when presenting to certain audiences. I am finishing a degree to become a teacher and have found, through study and implementation, that rowdy audiences will sometimes stop and wait for a person to continue if they pause during a presentation and stay completely silent. Think back to all the times your old teachers might have stopped talking in class and looked around the room, especially at the students talking the most.
