If you know a portion of a figure and along which axis or axes it is symmetrical, you can use this information to extrapolate data and find the total perimeter.
For example, if I have a circle on a graph, but only see the right side which I know to have a perimeter of 14 cm, I can assume the remaining half of the circle is also 14 cm and our total perimeter is 28 cm.
