Hi Jill,
You should seize the opportunity and apply. If you can pay for it and if there are some available fellowships as well, then do it. If for whatever reason you cannot matriculate immediately in the Fall, then you can defer. Confirm this with admissions.
On another note, often times, universities won't publicize all of their fellowship opportunities, so you have to be very proactive. I hope that this helps.
