What is the current status of geophysical global cooling theory?

Plate tectonics effectively rubbished the theory of geophysical global cooling as a means of explaining many surface features on the Earth. However, [this wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geophysical_global_cooling) says that the same process is responsible for certain surface features on the surfaces of Mercury and the Moon. Do such processes play no role in Earth's Geology? Or are they only effective on smaller bodies? Why?

On smaller bodies that do not have plate tetonics, as the planet contracts by cooling, it is not possible for part of the crust to slide under the other without buckling. On Earth any contraction due to cooling is easily handled by one plate sliding under another at subduction zones.
