Three more than 6 times a number is equal to twice the number decreased by 9

I just need the number to be an "x" and please show work because I want to know how you did it.

3 + 6x = 2x - 9

 

12 = -4x

 

x = -3

 

To check, plug in x = -3 to each side.

 

3 + 6 ( -3) = 2(-3) - 9

 

3 + (-18) = -6 - 9

 

-15 = -15

Let x be number in question:

6x + 3 = 2x - 9

Subtract 2x from both sides:

6x - 2x + 3 = -9

Subtract 3 from both sides and combine like terms:

4x = -9 - 3

4x = -12

Divide both sides by 4:

x = -12/4

x = -3
