Putting Objects on Same Layer After Drawing
In the Illustrator Layer menu > click on the first layer > hold the shift key and click on the last layer > click the "column" icon(panel menu) in the upper right hand corner of the layers panel > select "Merge Selected" and all of your objects will be on one layer.
If you don't want to select layers linearly from top to bottom, but skip one or more layers > start from the top and click that layer > press and hold command(iMac)/control(PC) key > click the next layer and so on. If you you click a wrong layer, just click it again to deselect it. Then click the "column" icon(panel menu) in the upper right hand corner of the layers panel > select "Merge Selected" and all of your objects will be on one layer.
Grouping Objects
The two steps above put the objects on the same layer, but didn't group them.
If you want to group them > click and hold anywhere outside of the objects and not on an object to begin selecting objects > continue to hold and drag cursor across the objects to marquee or select the objects to be grouped > right click and select group.
Editing Grouped Objects
To edit the objects in the group > double click on the group to enter isolation mode. You will notice a light gray bar/area appear just beneath the title tab and above the artboard. It shows you where you are in the group. Edit objects and click the arrow on the left side of the gray bar/area to exit isolation mode.
Hope this helps.
