Creating a split screen video of a multitrack recording?

It's fairly common to see videos in which, to accompany a piece of music created using overdubs, we see a split screen showing the artist performing each overdub. What functions, in which software, may be used to create videos like this?Is it a matter of mixing the audio separately, then manually synchronising the video, or is there software that automates the process?Answers for any software are welcome, but budget answers (iMovie, Movie Maker) are welcome, as well as any software designed for this specialised purpose.

No one software is designed for this. And no the music doesn't have to be mixed separately. It would be useful to have stems, which are the individual recordings, that way you could mute all other tracks while you watch that video and listen to that audio. As for the picture in picture or side by side...that is just using whatever effect allows you to change the video size. In adobe you just double click on the clip in the timeline. Avid you can use 3D warp or resize or any other effect and then go to the lower right hand corner of your effects editor and activate the 3D tool which will bring up an additional menu that looks a lot like 3Dwarp. In Final cut pro you would go to the video strip on the top right and assist size there...also no effect needed to add to clip....although if you're using FCPx you're going to have a terrible time lining up audio and keeping it like that on the magnetic time line if you have stems. I think I answered the whole question. Please ask if you want me to expand or add. Best of luck
