The general formula for density in the scientific context is mass over volume. In this question, population density is defined as the amount of people that live in a given area of land.
In order to find the population density of each state, we must divide the number of people living in that state by the land area of that state. For New Jersey we would divide 9.006 million by 7417 square miles, which yields 1214 people per square mile.
For Alaska we would divide 739795 people by 571951 square miles. That gives just 1.29 people, or 1 person per square mile when rounded.
To put that into a sentence, we would say the state of New Jersey has more people per square mile than the state of Alaska.
