Draw a line that starts at A and ends at C. Place point B somewhere along that line. You know from the problem, that the distance from A to C is 28. You're going to add together AB plus BC to equal AC.

2x + (x-2) = 28

Now solve for x.

3x - 2 = 28

+2 +2

3x = 30

divide both sides by 3, x = 10
