Question

When do you know to standardize data (finding the Z value representing standard deviations from the mean)

To calculate probabilities? I have seen it being used sometimes, but then other times it isn't

If you are using the normal distribution and you want to use an "area under the normal" table to find the cumulative probability you would calculate a Z score to use with the table.
