You have it backwards, in some ways...actually the integral is a good way of defining area.
More to the point, however, is that what is needed is an analytic basis for the definition of the integral.
I don't know where you are in math, but I would suggest that you do some more reading....start of with Spivak's Calculus which is a very readable but thoroughly rigorous development of the definition of the integral.
