The simple answer is the Reformation. Early humanists (those who question the world around them, namely their government and religious leaders), like Martin Luther, questioned the church and its authority. This is the origination that led to people becoming more open to new ideas and other's beliefs during the Renaissance. It also allowed others to question religion and their government.
Another example could be the rise of the mercantilism during the Renaissance, which again allowed people from different areas of the world share their ideas and beliefs with one another.
