There can be a lot of answers to this question, as I am one and have held several extremely different roles at my company.
To sum it up in a sentence: a data analyst helps others understand the stories the data is telling.
That means that as an analyst you have to 1) get the data --which can be from a myriad of different places 2) make sure it's the right data 3) potentially do some additional calculations/modeling/programming using the data to test with it, or morph it into a form that is easily consumable and 4) find a way to make it easy to understand for someone to look at (turn the math into words/charts).
I've actually found that the ACT science section can be treated like a data analysis exercise, and when viewed that way, trying to understand the story in the charts/graphs/tables, the questions become much easier to answer.
